Everyone needs some time to themselves. They need a few moments a day to collect their thoughts and think about or do something they enjoy. When you’re a parent, finding time every day for that purpose is tough. Children demand a lot of your time so it’s easy to spend the entirety of your day worrying about someone else’s needs. Use these tips to recharge and get some personal time.
1. Wake up early or stay up late.
Being a mom is pretty tiring, so you may not be able to swing the extra time. If possible, wake up a half hour earlier or stay up a half hour later than usual. Do something during this time just for yourself. Take a long shower or bath. For once drink a cup of coffee before it cools, or read the paper.
2. Have your kids do some work.
You aren’t a cruel and abusive mom by insisting that your children take part in the maintenance of their home. Working together is part of being a family. If there’s a task you think your child is capable of handling, let them have it. Obviously you won’t have your six-year-old change your car’s oil, but putting away toys or dusting aren’t out of the question.
3. Actually use those peaceful moments.
Whenever you get a few moments of peace, don’t waste them by revisiting your to-do list or rechecking something. You have to actually take advantage of the few minutes of personal time you receive throughout the day.
4. Treat yourself now and then.
Every so often you need to consider your own needs as well. No one will be upset that you were five minutes late to dance class because you stopped for a coffee. If you constantly deny yourself the little things in life, you’ll start to resent being a mom.
5. Cook simple dinners.
Some moms feels a pressure to create elaborate, multi-course meals for their family every night. Dial back your urge to be complicated. There are plenty of fast, healthy options that don’t require a week’s worth of planning.
6. Get help!
Many moms don’t take advantage of the help their families offer because they are too proud. Take them up on their offers for a night out. Your parents or siblings would probably love to have your children for a few hours, even overnight. There’s no need to exhaust yourself if others are happy to shoulder some of the burden.
7. Relax when your kids do.
No matter how rambunctious, energetic, and hyper-active your kids may be, they have to stop every once in a while. When they are napping or at school, enjoy some of the time to yourself. Don’t fill the space needless cleaning and organizing.
