Water Safety Tips for Kids During the Summer

water-safety-tipsSummertime means water time! Ask your kids what they want to do on a hot day and we guarantee they will say go swimming. After all, what’s more fun for you and the kids on a hot day then to go to the beach or a pool? As fun as cannonballs, boogie boarding and wave diving can be, they can also be dangerous. It is very important that you always watch your kids when taking them near water in the summer. To ensure summer fun in the sun, make sure you follow these five water safety tips:

1) Supervised Swimming

If you plan on taking your kids to the beach often this summer, make sure you enforce with them that they can only swim in designated areas. Most beaches will have sections roped off of where you can swim and where there is a lifeguard on duty. There is a reason they don’t allow people to swim in certain areas, and your kids need to follow the rules for their own safety.

2) Buddy Swim

Another swimming safety tip you should teach your children is to always swim with a buddy. It is important that your child never swims alone. Even at a public pool, or a life guarded beach, they should have a buddy. Swimming with a friend ensures that if something happens, someone is right there to get help from an adult.

3) Use Life Jackets

If you know that your child doesn’t know how to swim or isn’t a strong swimmer, make sure that they always have a life vest on near water. No matter if it’s a shallow pool or a lifeguarded area, things happen and you always should take precaution. When your child wears a life vest near water, mom can relax and enjoy her time!

4) No Running

This one may seem like common sense, but if you are at a pool there should be a no running rule. If your child were to fall, especially in the water, they could get seriously hurt. Chances are you are not a doctor, or a lifeguard, so save yourself from panicking by asking your children not to run near the pool.

5) Keep your water clean

If you have a pool in your backyard, make sure it is clean. Water safety also includes keeping the water clean and sanitary for your family. Invest in the proper tools to keep your water crystal clear!
