Tips for Saving Money on Baby Gear

save money buying baby gearBaby gear can be incredibly expensive, especially with your first child when you need all new gear. However, there are options for buying inexpensive baby gear and you can certainly find bargains if you know where to look. For example, many thrift stores sell gently used to almost brand new baby items at a fraction of the price. Don’t rule out certain options just yet; take a look at what’s available and figure out how to get the best deal for your family.

1. Search Craigslist

Craigslist has a section for browsing through baby and kids items that are for sale. They also have a section for items that are being given away free. Many parents who have children who have outgrown their baby items simply list these items for sale cheaply on Craigslist. You can find a great deal, but make sure to inspect any item carefully before you purchase it and do some research to make sure that the item has not been recalled.

2. Ask for hand-me-downs

Your friends, family, and neighbors are bound to have some baby gear gathering dust in the attic that is not being used. Ask them if they have any unused baby gear that they would be willing to part with and make sure to clean each item thoroughly. It is important to keep in mind, however, that older products may not meet current safety standards. Also check to make sure none of the products have been recalled.

3. Shop thrift stores

Thrift stores are great places to find gently used baby gear. Many times you will even find baby gear that is practically brand new and has only been used once or twice. These items will be very cheap compared to buying brand new items in a regular store. Everything you buy from these stores must be cleaned and disinfected and stay away from old, plush toys.

4. Check your phone

These days there are plenty of apps for your smartphone that can help you find coupons and discounts whether you’re shopping online and in-store. Before you make your purchase, browse through your coupon apps, like RetailMeNot to see if you can get a discount on your purchase. Other apps like Red Laser let you scan the barcode of the item you wish to purchase and will show you where the best deals for that item are.

5. Buy floor samples

Some furniture outlets and department stores are willing to sell you their floor samples for a discount because the product may have some sort of small nick or imperfection, which does not allow them to sell it at the full price. Aside from the small nicks, the product is probably in perfect working condition so a floor sample is a good way to save money.
