Eco-Friendly Lessons for Toddlers
In your quest to adopt a healthy, green lifestyle, you’ll have to pass your environmentally-friendly skills on to your family. It can be tough to teach your small children abstract concepts, like why they should be protecting the environment, but it’s worth it to build lifelong habits.
If you like your home and the products you use to be eco-friendly, then your first task in teaching your toddler to do the same is explaining to them why it is important and how it can be done. Once you have mastered the why, you can move on to the what and how. Here are four fun ideas to teach toddlers to be eco-friendly.
Plant a garden
One of the best ways to teach is to show. Take a walk outside with your toddler and show them all of the beautiful flowers and trees in your neighborhood. Make sure you explain to them why they are so important and how mistreating the Earth can lead to problems. Once you have explained why plants and trees are important, you two can bond and plant a garden together! Your toddler will love watching their garden blossom! Make sure to give them their own spot so they can be proud of something.
Make recycling fun
After you explain to them what recycling is, make sure to show them what can and cannot be recycled. You can show them what the recycling symbol looks like and even make a game out of who recycles the most every week! Turn the whole thing into a game so he doesn’t dread the chore.
Go on a toy hunt
Do you have an older child who has outgrown their toys? Don’t throw those used toys away; give them to your younger child. Most times parents will hand down clothes, but throw away the toys. Your child will love that they have “new” toys to play with and will learn the lesson that it is better to re-use than to buy new!
Take them to the zoo
Does your child know that not taking care of our environment can lead to animal distinction? Okay, so I know that they probably do not know what that means, but you can help them learn by taking them to the zoo. Have fun walking around and looking at all of the silly animals, but make sure you turn this fun trip into a learning lesson as well.
Show them pictures of animals that aren’t around anymore because of environmental changes. While there, let them know that these cute animals can become extinct, like many others, if we don’t take care of the land.
