9 Tips to Simplify Your Morning Routine

simplify morning routineIt’s easy for a family’s morning to fall into chaos. Between getting everyone ready and dropping everyone off, most mornings are a frantic rush to get things done. It doesn’t have to be so difficult, however. With a few simple tricks, you can save a lot of time.

1. Delegate some tasks to the older children.

If you’ve got a few kids at home, don’t be afraid of passing off one of your chores to the older kids. Make it his or her job to make the beds, prepare breakfast or pack the car. There’s no reason everyone can’t help out in the morning.

2. Put everything you need in one place.

Ideally, everything everyone needs for the day should be placed by the door the evening before. Homework should be checked and packed in bags. Coats, shoes, hats and gloves should be hung nearby and not scattered throughout the house. Keep your briefcase or work bag there too.

3. Use music to keep everyone moving.

Everyone needs a little motivation in the morning. You can spur everyone out of bed with some lively music. It will subconsciously put everyone in an energetic mood so they get ready quickly.

4. Shower in the evening.

This might depend on your job and how you need to look for the next morning, but if you can swing it, bath everyone the night before. Showers are the biggest time sink the morning, especially for younger people who aren’t motivated to get it done.

5. Don’t overschedule your family.

Sometimes we end up committing ourselves and our families to more than we can handle. Morning isn’t really the time to schedule lessons or activities. Avoid setting up sleepovers during school nights unless you’re sure your kid can get to school on time.

6. Pack lunches the night before.

Making everyone’s lunch the night before is a simple way to cut down your morning routine. You won’t be forced to rush and make a mistake, like forget someone’s sandwich. It will also help you pack healthier lunches instead of throwing in whatever is easiest.

7. Set out clothes the night before.

For some people, the hardest part of the morning is picking out one’s clothes. Handle this chore in the evening when you’re unrushed to test out your clothes in the mirror.

8. Get to sleep a little sooner.

It sounds like a simple tip, but getting to bed thirty minutes earlier and waking thirty minutes earlier can make your mornings a breeze. Imagine how much you could get done with a half hour of time before the kids wake up. This is especially helpful for kids who struggle to rise; thirty minutes could mean just enough time to lazily wake up before they need to get into gear.

9. Delegate bathroom time.

Many families struggle getting everyone sufficient time in the bathroom, but it’s often because one person is spending more time than they should. Encourage this person to rise earlier if they would like more time. Police the situation so everyone gets their time.
